I had a dream last night. A strange and wonderful, footbally kind of dream.
I dreamed that it was late August and the GODs had reached the semi-final of the O35 competition, just one game away from the Grand Final.
I dreamed that the only team who could stop them was Dunbar's other O35 team – Digger and Phill's highly regarded "A's" team who had finished above the GODs in second place in the league.
I dreamed that this epic contest was staged at a sunny Reg Bartley Oval in front of a healthy-sized crowd, many with split loyalties.
I dreamed that the GODs played for the first time in the club's dark blue 'away' kit (incidentally, those pale blue side panels are oh, so flattering to those GODs of a 'fuller' figure)
I dreamed that the GODs took to the field pumped up and determined to repeat their earlier victory over the "A's" in the regular season.
I dreamed that the first half was tight affair with the GODs slick passing and movement carving out several opportunities, whilst the "A's" looked a threat with their more direct style of play.
I dreamed that Stuart was once again a colossus in goal, that Taggy swept all day in imperious fashion, that Terry won just about everything in the air and on the ground, that Steve cast aside concerns of a dicky knee to deliver an energetic and committed display, that Pedro hardly gave his opponent a kick and Matt L provided poise and calmness on the ball.
I dreamed that the midfield trio of Nige, Giggsy and Gauty ran hard and showed real class in stringing together neat passing patterns through the middle of the park to create a stream of promising attacks all day long. I dreamed that Ken slotted into the middle later in the game to snuff out any remaining danger from the "A's" danger men.
I dreamed that wing backs Barnesy and Matt T cancelled out their highly-regarded opponents, whilst providing extra thrust of their own moving forward. That Andy and Marco provided extra spark and commitment off the bench to ensure their was no let up in pressure.
I dreamed that Wes and Dave W gave the "A's" defence a torrid afternoon with their pace and movement, whilst Dave W and Sean provided further support when they came on for an attacking stint.
I dreamed that half-time arrived with scores goalless, but a growing sense of self-belief in the ranks of the GODs.
I dreamed that the GODs broke the deadlock some 10 minutes into the second half as Giggsy latched onto a short pass from Wes (I think), made space for himself on the edge of the box and fired an unstoppable, rising left foot drive into the top corner of the net. A glorious strike and one worthy of the occasion.
I dreamed that the GODS continued to press forward looking for a second goal to kill off the tie, whilst the "A's" started to rely more on set pieces and long balls into the box which the GODs rearguard was able to defuse with only a few minor scares.
I dreamed that with time ticking away, the "A's won a free kick just outside the GODs' area but with hearts in mouths, the ensuing shot deflected wide and with it went the "A's" last hopes.
I dreamed that the referee's whistle blew shortly afterwards to signal victory to the GODs in a hard-fought game.
I dreamed that the game was played in very good spirits with the "A's" players putting aside their personal disappointments to congratulate their opponents at the end of the game and wish them well for the Grand Final next weekend.
I dreamed that virtually the entire GODs' squad adjourned to the pub for a post-game ale, basking in the warm glow of a job well done and the prospect of a shot at glory.
So many dreams, such a disturbed night.
But you know what the only shame about all of this?
The shame is that dreams don't come true…..or do they?
