She Ran the Night on Thursday and she ran the day on Sunday; Annabel was the star for Dunbar as they triumphed over Queens Park in an epic contest at NCIE. Charlotte and Rachel’s strapless ankles eagerly awaited her arrival before kick-off and she opened and closed the game with two spectacular goals.
It was top of the table clash at its best; all even at half time with one goal apiece, a tough second half battle that could at times have gone either way, but it was Dunbar that had the edge and came away worthy winners.
The first half was quite intense where both midfields battled hard to filter quality ball through each end giving the defenders much to do. It was a tightly played game where first touch had to be precise. Kas was unlucky not to get on the end of a cross in the first quarter. Dunbar were first to score however, when a high ball in from midfield was beautifully brought down by Annabel who touched it on a little and on the better angle stuck it superbly to the back of the net. This lead was quickly equalised by Queens Park following a quick passage of play through midfield, out to their striker on the left, who made no mistakes finding the net. It remained at this pace until half time when I’m sure both teams were delighted to get a break.
Dunbar, with their strong bench, had the advantage over their opponents and had some fresher legs in the second half. The ball changed ends quite often and both teams enjoyed a dominant spell in front of goals which saw some narrow wides and brave clearances. It was when Dunbar slowed the ball and playing a passing game that they broke the deadlock. Julia out on the right sent a great pass through the centre to Nina who in turn split the defense with a forward pass, where Maggie, with a perfectly timed run got in behind to score a cracker. There was an immediate resurgence from Queens Park but some quality defending by Sarah and Charlotte halted their initial attempts. It was tit for tat but Dunbar ended the last quarter with some quality defending, tight marking of Queens Park central midfielders and controlled passing going forward. To close off the game, Annabel out on the right zoomed past two defenders and kicking from the side of her boot, hit the bottom left corner of the net to get her second and make it five wins out of five; well done girls!
Also well done to Maggie, Chelsea, Elaine and all that Ran the Night on Thursday and get injury free soon to Cat and Sandra.
Dunbar squad: Mel Rowley, Lisa Styrud, Sarah Ferris, Charlotte Bisland, Elaine Oliver, Maggie Thorarinsdottir, Nina Malmstrom (captain), Chelsea Wallis, Rachel Donnelly, Heather Scott, Annabel Kingsford, Kastelle Adamson, Julia Kish and Marie O’Looney (Catherine Hooper inj. but on the sidelines cheering on).
