Last game at the Reg ends in frustration
It’s been the story of the season really. Let in an early goal, missed a hat full of chances and failed to finish the job against an easily beatable team in a finals position. Oh what could have been! However, there were a couple of twists to our Reg Oval swan song and it came in the form of Paul Cannon between the sticks for the first 45 and a return of top scorer Dan Davy.
Dunbar started well knocking it around confidently from the off but Sydney Uni’s first venture into our box won them a penalty after Matty ‘what the f**k are you doing in my penalty box, have that sunshine’ Purcell showed them who was boss. Unfortunately the ref didn’t see it that way and pointed at the spot. Cannon managed to get a hand to a well struck penalty but it wasn’t enough to stop it nestling in the back of the net. One nil down inside the first 5 minutes again.
Thankfully the heads didn’t drop and Dunbar continuously stretched the Uni defence with some great through balls from the midfield. Eventually Dan Davy managed to get on the end of one and passed Uni’s centre half only to have his legs chopped from behind and as the last man he had to go. Uni down to ten men and JP with a chance from outside the box. Needless to say the man, who is actually named after the pope, delivered a gift from God straight into to the top corner to get us back level.
Dunbar continued to push for the second before half time and looked dangerous at every attack before finally getting a corner. Matty ‘what the f**k am I doing getting on the end of a corner, it’s the first we have scored this season’ Purcell made up for his earlier foul with a bullet header from the Pope’s corner. Half time Dunbar 2 – 1 up.
The second half was like something out of ‘Football’s Greatest Misses Volume 1’ DVD where we couldn’t hit a cow’s backside with a Banjo from 2yds. Despite dominating the first 20mins Dunbar failed to capitalise and started to flag against the younger legs of Uni. Eventually we paid the price for some late tackles and they managed to bend a free kick round the wall giving Aaron no chance. 2 – 2 Final score.
Hat tips all round, particularly to Bruce at the back, The Pope in the middle and Dan Davy made a great return.
