Games against Coogee are always tough and this was to be another game that went down to the wire.
The squad over recent weeks has suffered an unusually high injury count and a couple of players entered this match with niggerling knocks. We started slowly and it took us an eternity to get into the game. After about 15 minutes after good lead up work down the left from Gaffers, a low cross found Antonio in the box who drove the ball into the back of the net from close range. 1-0 and we were lucky and knew we needed to lift our game. Coogee continued to fight though and scored a tidy goal from the edge of the box after about 10 minutes later. 1-1 and we were battling to again regain control of the match.
The magic came soon after when a great long ball from smithy found Marko on the run and after outstripping his marker, strode towards goal and calmly placed it past the oncoming keeper. We went in 2-1 at half time knowing we could lift.
Unfortunately Coogee scored a goal quickly after the restart and then again 10 minutes later to take a 3-2 lead.
Finally the penny dropped and we realized that this season we need to make our own luck and we started to dominate the game with solid possession and pressure on the ball. A great build up down the right saw a fine cross whipped in by Sparey that was met on the volley by an advancing Graham who whipped it into the far corner of the goal. A fine strike to bring us back to 3-3
Our superior fitness was starting to show. Coogee continued to substitute players at every free kick opportunity to slow the game down. A strong performance from Peter out wide who had a great match distributing and defending with vigour kept causing them problems out wide. Solid performances up front from Gaffers and Antonio also saw many attacking raids thwarted by saves and last minute defending.
With a minute to go, a cross whipped in from the left found smithy charging into the box and turning on a dime only to be clattered to the ground by a Coogee defender. A penalty was awarded and calmly slotted in by Marco for his brace.
Overall a well fought victory coming from behind. We know we can play better but it is good to get the points from a tough match.
